I want to book it early as I know there is a long wait, so if i booked a few weeks before my 17th birthday I can take it straight away as I want to do a crash course....

Yes, you can book a Theory Test for the date of your 17th birthday.
You'll need to apply for your provisional driving licence first as you'll need a driver number before you can book a Theory Test.
You can apply for a provisional driving licence up to 3 months before the date of your 17th birthday.
Waiting lists for Theory Tests aren't usually very long though - usually 2 to 4 weeks at most...

Sorry but no you cant,you need your driver reference number which you will get when you receive your provisional licence.

You do, as ewanmacphail says, need to have a provisional licence first in order to have your driver reference number. Presuming we're talking about a car, you can apply for your provisional shortly before your 17th, but it won't be valid until your birthday. The waiting lists aren't necessarily that long, they can fluctuate wildly. |

The waiting list isn't that long...or at least it wasn't a short while ago where I live. But as long as you are 17 when you take the test I'm sure it will be fine to book it earlier |

You can Apply for your Licence 3 Months before your 17th birthday.
It should take up to 3 weeks to arrive.
You need your Licence Number when you book your theory test.

only if you currently hold a CBT (compulsory Basic Training) provisional driving licence. Which you can get at 16. As you will need your drivers licence number to book the test. |

If you live in the UK you can take it when you turn 16 years old and it lasts for two years. So yes, you can book it :] |
