I'm graduating from a school in New Orleans in May and moving to Massachusetts immediately. Can I buy a car down here and get something like a temporary registration so I can drive to MA and get it permanently registered/insured there?

I bought my car when I was living in another state. When I came to MA, I had to show them the title and the price and sales tax I paid (they need to know that for some reason, like for excise or something). Transferred registration easily. |

Yeah, I did that in utah and registered it in idaho and then drove it in utah. They will give you a temp registration. Easy. |

Explain your situation.
The temp tag even if issued as required in the state you register the vehicle, should allow you 30 days usually, and enough time to settle and explain the situation to the reg. office in your new location.
You have to go through Title transfering regarding state of origin and settling anyhow, and many states require that you make all your legal docs relevant to one state, one address, but I own a vehicle originally tagged and licenesed in Florida, moved to Wash. State, registered there, transferred title, moved back to Florida, transferred registration, but still maintain wash title. I'm selling the vehicle and the only requirement is that I alert them of the sale. It will be up to the new owner to transfer the title/location, etc.

Sure the only state that you can't is California (higher cemmission standards). You might want to do some comparison shopping, unlikely but you might find the car cheaper in Ma. |
