Can I drive my dad's car if I'm under their insurance?
Find answers to your legal question.

Can I drive my dad's car if I'm under their insurance?

I am 18. I recently got my license. My mom added me under the car insurance. I want to drive one of my dad's cars to school because it's the only car that stays at home every day. The car has full coverage. They say I can't drive it because if I get into an accident I will get into trouble. Is that true? or are they saying that just so that I wont touch the car. I know how to drive really well and I think they are afraid that I will go and crash, which gets me really mad. All I need the car for is to go to school and 2 hours later come back home unless I go out with my girlfriend. Do you think they say to not drive the bmw on purpose? I want to prove them wrong...

They probably just don't want you to drive that car on a regular basis. If your name is included in their insurance (including that particular car) then you could legally drive it.

Bottom line, it's their car and they have final call on who drives it.

Cut 'em some slack, tho. Do you have any idea how much their insurance rates have gone through the roof since you got your license? :)

If you have more then one car the Ins will ask which you drive, where, how far, how often. I just went through that with my daughter and she is 25. Your age and lack of drivers years probable sky rocketed the payments The deductable probable went up also,,, part they pay after accident, even on full coverage,, It appears you may not be covered on the one you meantion.Im sure its diffcult to understand but insurance coverage is extrememly important. Also now if insurance is not enough to cover a accident suit they can file to claim your house as well. *mamatx

If you have a valid drivers license, the car is insured and you are listed on the policy, then by law the insurance company MUST cover you in the event of an accident. Your parents permission to drive , though takes precedent. (not legally, but it's their call). If they say you can't drive, then their word is law.

Yes, you can drive it. As long as you're covered on their insurance plan, you're allowed to do so. Now, if you got in an accident and weren't on their insurance, you could get in trouble and pay a fine ;[

You are on the policy, but you're probably excluded from that vehicle since it is full coverage and it would be very expensive to have an 18 year old boy on a full coverage vehicle, your parents are correct I'm afraid.

if your parents have you on there insurence then you are able to drive it but if you mother said that if you get in to a car crash and you will get in trouble they are just wored that would happen so it is your own choice if you what to drive it

Hello,

We often take for granted what a convenience our cars are. I was paying a low price for my insurance, but at renewal time, my insurer tried to increase my rates.

My friend sent me a link to this site:

http://www.housing-assistance.org

They have a free search to compare auto rates from the major insurers. It saved me a lot of money!

Best of Luck
