Can I drive my friends car without insurance?

Can I drive my friends car without insurance?

I don't own a car. I don't have auto insurance. If I borrow a friends car, am I covered under his insurance?

is there a special type of insurance for people like me?

Yes, you are covered under his insurance as long as he has given you permission to drive the car. You would only need to be listed on his policy if you lived in his household. Children living at home need to be listed on their parent's policy to be covered, probably why you are receiving so many incorrect answers that state that you must be listed on the policy. This is universal throughout the US and the UK. The UK does have the occasional policy that restricts operation to the named drivers only but this is the exception, not the rule, and normally only restricts under-25s from driving the vehicle.

It is possible to get a blanket liability policy that will cover you when driving someone else's car (I have one myself) but it is only effective as additional coverage, not primary coverage when driving someone else's car.

Insurance goes with vehicles, not with people. If you are licensed to drive, and have his permission, you are covered under his insurance.

If the car is insured and you have a valid driver's license, then you should be ok.

You will notice that even the top contributors differ in their opinions.

That's because the answer lies in your friends insurance policy. Some policies have an exclusion clause and certain drivers are NOT covered. Others are broad and include casual drivers. Some allow casual drivers but have a minimum age.

The bottom line here is that your friend needs to contact his insurance company and simply ask. That's where the answer is.

The risk for failing to ask can be monumental for both of you.

In an age where even the WHEEL of a car can cost over a$1,000, even a minor fender bender can easily rack up $20k in damages - and that does NOT include the medical and pain and suffering portions. Without insurance the other side will sue BOTH of you and you, or your parents, will be paying that off for some time.

enought said... have your friend check.

It depends on the state and/or the car owner's insurance. Some states/insurance policies cover anyone who uses the vehicle (with the owner's permission) but others require the driver to be insured.

(That's why you're getting so many "yes you can"/"no you can't" answers - it's totally dependent on the state and/or the type of insurance the owner of the vehicle has.)

Best to check your particular situation first just in case.

Some insurance covers driving by an uninsured motorist; have your friend check the policy or call the agent.

You do not need insurance for yourself to drive your friends car.But make sure your friend has car insurance on the car and be careful driving their car. That way you do not need to worry about the insurance.

You can get a "occasional driver" insurance which is cheaper, but you do need insurance.

No you are not covered unless you are on the insurance

cassarfarrugia

No, you ARE NOT covered by his insurance. As above talk to an insurance company as to coverage options.
