I'm sixteen and looking to buy a car. I'll have a license in about 4 months, but I want to buy a car first - that way I'm good to go. Is it legal to let my car sit in my garage or driveway for a few months without insurance or plates? I know plenty of people who have had cars before they've had licenses, but I want to make sure I'm not breaking any laws. I live in Connecticut.

I think that you have another problem. A 16 year old cannot own a car unless they are emancipated. Until you are 18 the car must be in the name of a person 18 or older.
As for insurance, as long s it it parked and not driven on public streets then it needn't be insured. Although some state require proof of insurance before it can be registered. |

You might want to look into getting just comprehensive insurance on the car too - this covers fire, theft, vandalism, etc while the car is sitting in the garage. That way you don't just lose the $$ if something happens to it while it's parked.
Comprehensive coverage is pretty inexpensive and then when you are ready to register it & start driving all you'll have to do is call the insurance company and add on the other coverage that you want/need to have. |

If it's on private property and not registered, you don't need insurance.

No you can't own a car, It states in the policy that a car owner should be at least 18. |

As long as the vehicle is not registered it does not have to be insured - just keep it off the streets and locked up since it isn't insured. |
