I am going to be scrapping my car, but it has a great registration number! Can I sell it as a private number? Experience anyone?

Contact one of the cherished number dealers that advertise in the national press and/or motoring magazines to get an approximate value for the number. Use one that is a member of the Cherished Numbers Dealers Association (CNDA). They will also be able to advise you on what to do.
I would guess that your best be is to put the number "on retention" before you scrap the car. The car will probably be issued with a new number, and you can then scrap the car (remember to inform DVLA that the car has been scrapped).
Don't scrap the car until you have either transferred the number to another car, or put it on retention.

To sell the number plate and then to have it transferred the vehicle would have to be Taxed and MOT-ed and the person transferring has to own both vehicles, on paper at least, otherwise you will have to go through the DVLA. Therefore if you have a month or so sell the car with the numberplate. |

You should be able to as long as it is a cherished plate. The DVLA can confirm this for you.
If it is just a old style plate which by coincidence is a good plate then no you will not be able to. It will say on the registration certificate that the plate is non-transferable. |

Yes contact the DVLA as that number is registered to you. |

Assuming that you're in the UK, contact the DVLA for instructions. If you're in the US, check with your state's DMV to see if this is possible.
But don't scrap the vehicle until you've worked out the procedure! Once you scrap it, you won't be the registered keeper any more and won't be able to sell the cherished number, though the breaker will. |

Cherished plates etc (google it) will offer you a price. |
