Can I transfer a driver's license from Florida to Texas?

I'm 16, and my parents are divorced with joint custody of me; one lives in Texas and the other lives in Florida, so I think I could qualify as a resident of either one, though I spend most time in Texas. In Texas, you have to have driver's ed first, then get a learner's permit and maintain it for six months before you're even allowed to take a driver's license test. However, in Florida, as long as you are 16 or older you can just walk into the DMV to take a test and get a license. Can I get a Florida license and then go back to texas and transfer it?

You really need to ask that of the TX DMV. If you're an adult you can simply transfer a valid out of state license to a TX license. However TX has really stiffened the rules for young drivers and I'm not sure whether they'll transfer for a 16 year old or not. |

No you can't. You will have to turn in your Florida license and meet all of the Texas requirements although you will receive credit for any Florida training you may have had.

No you cannot transfer it if you do not meet the basic minimum qualifications of the state where you want to get the new license. Since you are back and forth anyway, why don't you get your license in FL and be insured there? Since your parents have joint custody, I don't THINK it would be any problem for you to have it from FL and keep it there. If you meet the qualifications of FL and are licensed there, and can say that is your residence, you should be able to drive in TX as well with the license from FL. |
