Can a cop check your license plates and know if you have insurance on your vehicle or not?

Yes, the majority of the states have a data base that shows your insurance information linked to your plate number. If you get your insurance canceled for non payment, it usually hits within 10 days, and some states will suspend your license and registration if your insurance is dropped.

If your plate get run at random, and you don't have insurance on file, that is cause to see red and blue lights in your rear view mirrors.

It is dependent on the State. In Georgia for instance, insurance information is available to law enforcement by running a check of the plate number. Insurers are required in many states now to provide real-time insured information to the State DMV. Check with your state DMV or Insurance Dept.

If you don't, you need to make it a priority--it's illegal not to have it!

In some states yes. I live in Georgia and they can check your plate number or DL number and check your insurance.

Louisiana is one of the States that has an electronic verification system, along with NV, GA, SC, FL - just to name a few.

But, the GOOD news is....you're still a "one plate State" so they can ONLY tell if they are BEHIND you!

if they run your tags then YES they can! it happens all the time in charlotte. i didn't have my card on me when i went thru a DUI check and they ran all my info and told me it was ok because they could see that everythnig was valid.

No...but they can tell if you've been involved before and not had insurance. Like if you had a ticket before and didn't ahve insurance.

No, not yet, though. That's why they usually ask for your insurance & registration. However, currently their is a new system in cop cars that can read license plates & tell if the car is stolen, which probably has greater urgency! So, good luck and try to find a cheap insurance & at least get liability.

Not really. But some times, when a cop follows you, he/she may contact thier support and find out whether there is an insurnace on the car.

Well it depends on the state you live in, you see some states have laws that revoke the plates when you let your insurance lapse, so yes it is possible in such cases, most of the states though the cop has to ask you for proof of insurance
