I recently got into an accident with the damage estimate being $4,057. My car is kelly blue book high value $10,000. I really want this car declared totaled because I have gap insurance that would cover the difference. Can I request that the repair shop declare it totaled?

Go over the estimate and make sure they have covered ALL the damage.
Sometimes these shops are in one or the other following positions.
The ins co sent you there--so they want the work--so they lo-ball it. Meaniing some major damaje in not on the estimate. Its good for them and good for the ins co. But its not good for you.
You picked the shop --they want the work--they make the est so it gets ''fixed''. Again not all the damage is ''seen''.
Kabish??? Either way you are getting screwed.
And a lot of times its fixed with ''made in china'' parts. |

The repair shop won't total it. The insurance company has adjusters that take care of that. You can't fool that. They know what it is going to cost. |

Its up to the insurance company to total or not. You or the body shop don't decide that. Besides the damage has to be a lot higher compared to the value of the car...........ujn |

You can request it but its not going to happen.
If the vehicle is not totalled then all your insurance company will pay is the cost of repairs. Your gap insurance would not cover the balance as again, the vehicle was not totalled.
If you want the car totalled because you don't want it anymore, then after the vehicle is repaired, sell it or trade it in. |

Not a hope in heck unless there is substantial frame damage that can't be safely repaired.
Plus, repair shops can't write off cars, only your insurance company can make that call, unless, of course, the shop finds the frame is irreparably damaged.
Gap insurance doesn't pay the difference between write-off and blue book value, it pays the difference between insurance company pay-out and the balance on the loan. In other words, it doesn't put cash in your hands.
