Statutory Off Road Notice; is a cunning way of ensuring that a car is either taxed and shown as taxed on the database, or off the road in storage or being reconditioned and so on the database as such.

In the old days if you wanted to own a car and drive it on the road, you had to buy tax for it, this hasn't changed; but now if you don't want it on the road, it is no longer good enough to just NOT buy tax, you now have to also tell BIG BROTHER that it is off of the high-way and you will not be using it! It's a bit like writing to Tesco's to tell them that you won't be shopping there and getting fined heavily if you don't.

It just gives the government an ideal excuse to charge people even when they haven't got a car on the road that needs to be taxed!!!!

Get the system and the forms right or suffer serious penalties; it is all done to drive cars off of the road and into the scrap yard.....strange in a society that is supposed to be banging the global warming, carbon foot-print, reduce, re-use and recycle drum so loudly!

But there you go, it's just another 'double-standard'!

You SORN a vehicle to take it off the road and exempt it from road tax.

SORN stands for Statutory off Road Notice.
You fill in the form for road tax exemption if your car is off the road due to accidents etc.

Statutory Off Road Notification, this is stating you vehicle is not on a public road so not liable to vehicle excise duty (road tax)

In addition to the other correct answers, it's worth remembering that if you sell a vehicle while it is registered 'SORN', the new owner must tax it or register it as SORN themselves. A 'SORN' notification is NOT transferrable.

Statutory Off Road Notification.

SORN = Statutory Off the Road Notification.

If your vehicle doesn't have current road fund tax (you know that little disc on your windscreen) you legally must register it as SORN. Or else the clever little computers at DVLA spit out a fine that you will have to pay. Costs nothing more than a stamp to register it.

Statutory
Off
Road
Notice

means you can NOT drive the vehicle on the road - NOT even if you live 1 metre from the nearest petrol/diesel selling garage, so you can fill it up and drive around your garden

maclaren
