As others have said, you can indeed book your first lesson now - just make sure you have your provisional licence with you on your first lesson to show the instructor. Also, make sure your eyesight meets the required standards - if it doesn't, you instructor will have the right not to take you on the lesson and still charge you!

As for AA v. BSM, I've worked for both and can assure you that the AA is better. That said, you have been given good advice above in telling you it is not the school that matters, it's the instructor. All schools have good and bad instructors, you need to try and get a recommendation from friends and family for a particular instructor, whoever he works for.

I would advise waiting until your provisional arrives as there could potentially be a problem, however unlikely.

As for the AA/BSM debate: BSM have a VERY high proportion of trainee instructors and charge top prices for the privilege of being taught by an unproven instructor.

AA, like every other school out there use qualified instructors who are all trained to the same standards and have passed the same qualifying examinations.

Don't get hung-up on BSM being the best or the AA being better than an independent driving school.

Go by recommendations from your friends and ask when you call to book if your instructor is an ADI (Fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor) or a PDI (Trainee, Potential Driving Instructor). A trainee may well be a good driver, but they may not be a good teacher and this is the part they have yet to be tested on.

Local independent instructors should also be a bit cheaper (£2-£5 per hour less) and could well save you a fortune in the long run.

Read the page linked below for more details on choosing an instructor.

EDIT: If you do book in advance with an independent school, they shouldn't expect you to pay in advance - BSM will.

You can book your lessons in advance but you can't have your first lesson until you have turned 17.

Why use AA or BSM when there are loads of great independent driving instructors that are quite often cheaper and better... check out http://www.2pass.co.uk

Good luck with the lessons!

Yes these companies love to have your money up front and in advance, best of luck with the driving lessons

You could book on for your 17th birthday in advance.

Yes you can perhaps book it for your birthday. The ADI will want to see your licence at the start of the lesson.

I cant see no reason why you cant because they will wait to your 17 yrs old anyway you might be lucky and get it on your birthday.

Yeah, you should be able to, but you won't be able to have the lesson until you have the provisional license.

And I've heard both are good. Personally I haven't been with either. There are plenty of others to choose from that are as good.

Edit: Usually you pay on the day of you lesson. You will always pay when you have the lesson, unless you book a number in advance and pay for them then (can be a bit cheaper)
