There's a lot of myth, rumour and misunderstanding about this. Read your insurance bumph closely, does it say you must have a valid MoT or does it say the vehicle must be in a roadworthy condition? I'd guess the latter.

There's a world of difference between being in a roadworthy condition and possessing an MoT - even the MoT paperwork points this out.

the day your mot ran out your insurance became invalid no insurance company will pay one penny for a car that shouldnt be on the road or fix one youll be lucky not to get a ban for no insurance good luck

You could try they might not check it - they will if it gets torched or stolen though.
If the accident happened before it ran out then you could have claimed but now it is too late as you have to tell them immediately.

No, you do not have any insurance cover. Without a valid mot your car is not legally allowed on the road apart from travelling to a pre-booked mot test at the nearest testing station to you. It is a prerequisite of your insurance that the vehicle is in a road worthy condition and complying with the law - in other words, with valid tax and mot. Your policy is void until the car has a valid mot certificate.

No your insurance is void if you have no MOT. I would not be surprised if you haven't any Tax either. Insurance Companies Wriggle out of paying any way they can. And with your case i think they are right.
