My mom and i for my sixteenth birthday went and bought a car...we both own the car basically...she co-signed for me...but she became the co-owner also...can i move out with my car...even though she is the co- owner of it??? She doesnt want me to move out...so she said if i do that she will call the police if i take my car with me...so i dont know what to do....:(

I'm 18 now....we bought the car when i was 16...

There is no "basically" to it. If her name is on the title, it's her car. If your name is, it's your car. Doesn't matter if she was a cosigner on the loan, what matter is what is on the title. Your name, your car, take it with you. Her name, it's hers. Leave it.
If both names are on the title, what is between the names? If it's "and" neither of you can do anything without the other signing off on it. If it's "or" you can have her name removed, but she could also have your name removed if she has the title in her possession. |

If your name is on the title the I don't think it should be a problem. Just to be safe I would call your local police department (not 911) and ask them. |

well...she is the legal adult co-owner, and if she wants you to stay at home AT SIXTEEN then you may have a problem-you can go throught the process of having yourself declared an emancipated minor-but can YOU finance the car on your own? basically, you may need to rethink the whole dependancy thing. If you want to be an adult-then you should be prepared for the full weight. you're both responsible right now-but what if she calls, not the police, but the insurance and loan company? |

I don't think the car is the real issue here.
Your mom is older and wiser than you and has made many mistakes in her life she'd like you to learn from. Eighteen is still young. Don't worry so much about what you CAN do - take a step back and think baout what you SHOULD do.
I can't say I know you or your situation, but I remember being young. If there's a conflict, get away, take some time to think, and try to work things out before you involve the law.
And the guy above me who was talking about AND v. OR on the title is right, as far as that goes . . . |

Yes, she can call the police. You are a minor and legally can't enter into a contract. So she is legally the owner of the car!! |
