Can i get a permit without taking drivers ed?

i live in NJ, and i really don't feel like taking the drivers ed class since most of the juniors told me it was a complete waste of time and money,also they said that all you need to pass is to read the book and take a bunch of practice test, is that true? Also in NJ, can you just go straight to the DMV and take the test without a class, because i know some states require the class.

I don't know about NJ, but here in PA you can just go straight to the DMV and take the test without a class. Just be aware that you might get some serious discounts on your car insurance if you take the class, so it's probably worth it to take it.

Its not a waste of time, it lowers the cost of car insurance until you get an adult license.

You could take Drivers Ed in the box, and not take the actual class. But, otherwise, you can wait until you're 18 and get your license.

drivers ed is NOT a waste of time if you utilize what the instructor is teaching you. If you just sit there and ignore the instructor, yeah your wasting time, the instructor's time. Most likely the kids who told you it is a waste of time were slackers that don't care about learning the proper skills to driving. Drivers Ed is important, you have to take it, GET OVER IT

Yes, but i recommend drivers education. Also if you find a school that also gives the test on their premises it is usually easier to pass.

u dont need drivers ed to get your permit (class cp) but u do need it to get a class d lisence. and plus if u pass u get a discount on insurance. at least thats wut it is in GA. but drivers ed is always helpful but a crap load of $$$. lol

No, you have to take Drivers Ed if you are under 18. Once you turn 18, you can go to DMV and take a test, but you'd have to wait a year or two for that. But they're right, DE is just a waste of time and money, but it's the only way to get your permit until your no longer a minor...if you aren't dying to drive it might be worth waiting until your 18 though...good luck! Oh, side note, you could also take the class at night, that's what I did. Than I only had 8, 3 hour classes, rather than a whole semester of them, and I was done and had my permit in 3 months.
