Can i get my moped De-Restricted?

I am 16 in about a month and im looking for a moped to buy brand new.
So i was thinking is it illegal to ge3t the moped de-restricted from the place i get it from???
I know im only allowed to go 31 mph but will it be illegal if i have a de-restricted moped but i only go under 31 mph?

You can't legally do it. Once it goes more than its design speed of 31mph, it's no longer a moped but a motorcycle, for which you need to be 17. |

why deristict if you only drive at 31? Wait till seventeen and buy suzuki 1300cc and drive at 197mph |

it is illegal to de-restrict a moped - yet so many people do. many people dont take into consideration the dangerous aspect of changing something that is restricted for a reason. its all well and good that you want to change your moped but the dangerousness of it all is that if you make a claim on your insurance, and the insurance company check up on the claim, if you are found to have derestricted your engine, then the insurance company reserves the right to step back as an illegal activity can jeopordise your cover.
if you want to get it derestricted and still not go over 31mph then it is completely pointless! |

It is illegal and will invalidate your insurance. As it'll probably be louder after the police are more likely to notice you too. Of course however I used to tune my 125's up as much as was possible. When you tune up a small bike like that there's a good chance of something breaking soon as they're not designed to give much more power and you'll be thrashing it to get anywhere. |

its illegal however you do it and if you get caught then you get done! is not worth it, plus if you fit a performance exhaust your more likely to knacker you engine because of the lack in back pressure. |

Myself bought a moped which had been imported and although was a 50cc it was already running over the 30mph speed,with a performance exhaust and air filter and plug and a smaller sprocket change it would see 61mph,
i did get pulled a few times about going fast but not with a speed gun and a show of the disc saying 50cc had the Police shocked.
But not really legal tho. |
