What happens when you use gasoline in a diesel engine? Either something expensive or something very expensive. Gasoline is designed to be resistant to self-ignition, gasoline in a diesel engine either won't ignite or will ignite at the wrong time. It is possible for unburned gasoline to go through a diesel engine, and hit the hot exhaust, THEN igniting, causing major exhaust damage.

Diesel fuel has a lower ignition temperature than gasoline. Combustion occurs simply by compression of the air/fuel mixture. Gasoline engines require a spark to ignite the fuel. Too much gasoline will not allow a diesel engine to work efficiently and, in your case, not at all.
Also, diesel engines use an injector pump to pressurize the diesel to form a fine mist when pushed through the injectors. These pumps require the lubrication of diesel to continue to work. Excess gasoline will cause failure in the injector pump and damage the injectors. That is likely what has happened to your engine. The cost of repairs runs $750 to $1200 for similar repairs, depending on the vehicle, so your bill is not out of line.

I know of no insurance policies that cover such damage. If a fire had ensued, the fire damage would have been covered, but not damage as you have incurred.

No, damage done to a car due to putting diesel into an unleaded gas tank normally is not covered under physical damage coverage.

Accidentally putting in the wrong type of fuel can cause mechanical damage which is not usually covered under comprehensive (other than collision) coverage.

Most insurance policies do insure stupidity, thats there main source of income, not that im calling you stupid, but the answer is NO... It would be considered mech damage, not comp, coll, or damage to an other person property..

i work in insurance claims in australia.

i've dealt with these types of claims before and the policies i handle do cover this type of event if it was purely accidental.

there is nothing in the policy we use to suggest that these damages would be excluded. it's not simply mechanical malfunction as there has been an accidental action that has caused the damages, hence the mechanical malfunction exclusion does not apply.
