Can someone have car registered in one state and car insuranse from another?

i just want to ask if it's ok, and if it's possible to have insurance from state other than that your car is registered in

As long as the insurance company knows, where the vehicle is kept.
Many companies operate in many states. |

No! They have to match and you risk a ticket because most states give you 45 days to change over even if you're only there for school. |

Now not too many companies allow registered vehicles out of state. But, you will want to assure that the insurance company is licensed in the state the vehicle is "garaged" at night. Many companies here in CA allow vehicles registered out of state: AIG, Bristol West, Drive from Progressive, Unitrin (FIC), Western General, etc. |

I would contact an insurance agent, but I know that parents insure cars for children who live in other states who go to college, but I do not know if there are certain rules. Call for the question |

Yes it is. We are military. We lived in one state and had out of state plates on our vehicles but insurance for the state we lived in. |

No, that's not ok. If you have a car registered in a particular state, then you need to have it insured in that same state. If you get into an accident while having insurance and registration in different states, your insurance policy can become void. |

In most cases, probably not, unless your regular military, or on a temporary tag...however they'er are exceptions, because the state that a civilian registers the auto in, makes and inforces all auto insurance laws. For instance, check with the county tax-accessor collector,in the county where you now reside for specific laws.Example: you are a civilian, & have permanently moved to austin, texas, from miami florida, & you want to have your cars "re- registered" in travis county-austin ,tx. THE TRAVIS COUNTY TAX-ACCESSOR COLLECTOR WILL TELL YOU WHETHER OR NOT THEY ACCEPT PROOF OF LIBALITY FROM AN AGENT IN FLORIDA. ALSO CALL YOUR AGENT, AND ASK, BEFORE YOU MOVE, HE MAY NOT COVER YOU IF AN ACCIDENT OCCURS AFTER A CERTAIN PERIOD OF TIME.YOUR POLICY MAY HAVE EXCLUSIONS & CLAUSES THAT ADDRESS THIS QUESTION. IF YOU HAVE MOVED TO ANOTHER STATE, THE SIMPLE THING TO DO, WOULD BE JUST TO CANCELL YOUR OLD AUTO POLICY, AND PURCHASE A NEW ONE IN THE CURRENT STATE IN WHICH YOU NOW RESIDE. |

Get the insurance in the state where you reside.
Military folks deal with this all the time. Our cars are usually registered in our home state (domicile) but the insurance is where we are stationed (residence). |

only if they are a licensed agent for that other state |

Your agent would be best equipped to answer that question. |

If you file a claim and your insurance company learns that you have housed and driven the vehicle for a significant period of time at a place other than where your policy indicates then they can cancel your policy and deny the claim. So, as long as your insurance company is aware of where you keep the vehicle and they are an authorized insurance provider in that state then you are okay. |

That is regulated by State law, I think. Many, I don't know if it's true of all, require any company selling insurance in their state to have a license in their state. The corporate offices might be elsewhere, but they have to have a local license.
Most companies well know the state laws, so ask the company of your choice.
If you are thinking of buying insurance in a cheaper state, that might constitute fraud since you are supposed to pay for the risk in your own location, be sure to check it out to avoid serious problems or no insurance when you need it. |
