Can someone report me after an accident?
|
Had a little incident this morning with a 4 x 4 - I came off a little worse though as my car has plastic panels, the damage should polish out. Certainly to repair it professionally would be more than the excess. The 4 x 4 had just a few scuffs to his drivers side wheel arch and no body damage whatsoever.
Personally I think he was in the wrong but it happened at a junction where two lanes go into one, so I think if it went to insurance or police it would be a bit 50/50. Therefore we agreed as there was little damage to either car to continue on our way.
I am now paranoid that he might report me to the police, I didn't take his registration no (stupid I know, I think I was still in shock, I have been driving for 20 years and this is my first accident). But once you (both) leave the scene, how do things stand? Once my repairs are done, how can he prove it was even me that he crashed into (although he will say I crashed into him).

You must report this incident to your insurance company whether or not you were at fault,it is a condition of you policy. |

Stop worrying about what might happen..I suggest you contact the police yourself and tell them about it..No one was hurt and you reached an agreement, that's it..................... |

If you want peace of mind ~ go to your local police station and explain what happened ~ tell them exactly what took place, that you both agreed that as no one was hurt, you both carry on, [silly not to have got his reg. number] but never mind, have the police report it in their book ~ so that if he tries and pull a fast one on you, you have the best possible statement from the police that you did report it, that one one was hurt in the incident, and that it was agreed that you both went on your way.
Best thing I can think of. |

Nothing to worry about, though I know that's easy to say. He can always try reporting you, though what for is open to speculation. The police won't be in the slightest interested. You stopped, as required by law, presumably offered him the opportunity to take your name and address and that's it. |

After the fact, the police may not even bother with the paperwork or making an entry into their computers. If the police do not come to the scene to see the position of the vehicles, it is now a case of your word against his & the police are then very limited as to what they can do. As of right now, all their report would say is that Person A claims that his vehicle collided with the vehicle of Person B. Both parties exchanged information & left the scene. End of report. Totally useless to either party & nothing that can be used against either party.
If he does want to try something underhanded, it would be his insurance agent he goes to, not the police, to file a claim against you for repairs to his vehicle.
But, since you both agreed on scene that neither was going to worry about contacting the police or insurance, then that's most likely as it will play out. And any repairs will be paid out of pocket by the vehicle owner. |

Simple. All accidents where over $1000 of damage occured MUST be reported by law. if it was less than that (which it sounds like it was) then just take some pictures, and forget about it. If they call the police, say you didn't report it because it was under 1000. but really, if he reports it, the police wont care. |

If he reports you and says you left the scene of the accident, it will be word against word, Because your story comes into play as well, unless he gets a lawyer. Get lawyers advice then decide. |
