If I give my car away as a gift with a good license plate, can the reciever use the original tag? Or get a refund to put a new tag on?

In the USA states have different rules. In some states, the plate stays with the car, in others it stays with the owner. What state are you in ? |

You really don't want to give anyone the license plate. That license plate registers to YOU, and anything that happens with that car (accident, tickets, bank robberies, etc.) will send the police knocking on your door. Take the plates off the car and let the new owner get their own... it's not your car anymore, and you shouldn't be responsible for its use or connected to it in any way. Write out a receipt (even though its a gift) stating that you have transferred ownership to the receiver and both of you sign it. Keep a copy for yourself. If you are transferring ownership, you should also sign the title to the car over to the new owner. |

That depends on the laws of your state. Here in Oklahoma you tag the car not the person, so the tag stays with the car. Next door in Kansas, the tag stays with the person. |

In California the plate and tags go with the car. The DMV rarely gives refunds for any reason.
Make sure you sign and turn in a Release of Liability form to the DMV or AAA Auto Club. It tells the DMV giver and receivers names and addresses, date of transfer and value of car. It gets you off the hook for any future shenanigans the car gets into.
to give a car away, you must sign the front of your title and buyer (receiver) fills out a statement of facts REG 156 saying it's a gift. |

Here in Yexas all of the tag most come off all the vehicle when you sale the vehicle's, they just started this about a years ago, Down here when you buy the car the tags come off know matter if you just have put the new tags on a month are so ago,what they do is prorate the price of the new tags , but it will still be due in the same month that the old tags was due. |

If you've just put new tags on a month or so ago they prorate the price of the new tags. The tags will still be expired and need renewal in the same month as the previous owners tags |
