A friend of mine thinks it is okay to use his driver's license even though it is expired, but he renewed it online and printed out a camera card. He hasn't taken the picture and wasn't issued a new card yet, because he is lazy. He is arguing with me that it is okay to drive around with his old license because it is technically not expired. Who is right here?

It really all comes down to what your state laws are. It could very well be OK for him to TEMPORARILY (key word) drive on what he printed out or it could be illegal to do so & he is subject to a citation for an expired license.
Give your DMV a call or find out if they have a website & see if what he is doing is legal or not. Getting the answer from DMV will definitely end the argument right then & there one way or the other. |

I don't know the law in your state, but I would think that if he renewed then he has a certain amount of time to get his picture taken. In my state you go to the drivers license office in person, they take your picture and you walk out with a new license. |

He might be OK if he keeps a copy of the online renewal application with him in the car until the renewal comes through; otherwise, expired is expired, and the same as having no license at all. Here in Indiana, we don't need a new photo if the DMV has a digital photo on file, but the new rules on "no glasses or hats" may change that. |
