The age limit for learning to drive is NOT going up to 18 and there are no plans for it to do so in the forseeable future.

Your sister can apply for her provisional licence up to three months before her 17th birthday but she cannot start learning until she is 17.

You have not understood his answer and have given incorrect information.

BSMGUY referred to "DLA".

DLA is "Disability Living Allowance", a social security benefit paid to people with a "disability". Those who receive the mobIlity component of Disability Living Allowance (the higher rate of DLA) CAN apply for their provisional driving licence in the UK 3 months before their 16th birthday and start driving lessons in the normal way FROM THE DATE OF THEIR 16TH BIRTHDAY.

Those NOT in receipt of higher rate DLA, can apply for a provisional licence 3 months before they are 17 and start driving lessons from the date of their 17th birthday.

You also erroneously state "talks are in progress about increasing the driving age and this will take effect within the next year or so but not yet". Again this is INCORRECT.

"Talks are in progress" in the form of a Driving Standards Agency (DSA) Consultation Paper in which a number of different proposals concerning the driving test and the way people learn to drive in the UK are under consideration. BUT RAISING THE AGE AT WHICH PEOPLE CAN START DRIVING IS NOT ONE OF THOSE PROPOSALS.

There are NO proposals to raise the driving age in the UK to 18, 21 or anything else.

So YOUR answer is "complete rubbish" and I suggest that anyone reading these answers disregards it.

@ mariaa!, I can confirm what others have said, unless she receives higher rate DLA, your sister has to be 16 years and 9 months before she can apply for her provisional licence and she can start driving lessons from the date of her 17th birthday completely unfettered by any worries about the driving age increasing to 18 because it isn't increasing ;)

And just for mbell1988 "Traffic Officer of 3 years", here's a link to the current DSA Consultation Paper - "Learning to Drive" ...it might be a good idea if you read it and find out what it DOES say, rather than talk nonsense about what you think it MIGHT say in future...

Technically you can get your provisional licence and DRIVE when you are 16 years old, but you need to have the full DLA before you can apply.
This rumour about the age increasing to 18 is just that a rumour. As for your last question, I think you answered it.....

i think the only thing i remember seeing is, if you have a special disabililty you can get one at 16, don't know what disability that is but i have seen it on documentation.

if she gets the ball rolling before the age goes up she will be fine

but for mopeds and small motorbikes its 16

As far as I know it's always been 17. If the law changes to 18, it won't matter to her as she's got to the deadline in time...that is of course if she applies for it at 17!

Yeah I think so because I applied for my provisional when I just turned 16 and straight after I got it, but the only problem with mine was that i couldn't drive until I was 17 but yeah I think she can get it. You should at least give it a try.

I got my Provisional License 5 months before I turned 17.

As for the driving age going up to 18... They are just rumours and they have been lingering for a while now.

Hi, first of all, BSMGUY your answer is complete rubbish, you cannot drive at the age of 16 as although you may receive it earlier your provisional license is not valid until your 17th birthday, thus if you do drive at the age of 16 you are committing an offence.. (driving not in accordance with license) and secondly talks are in progress about increasing the driving age and this will take effect within the next year or so but not yet so if your sister applies as early as she can and starts learning at 17 she should be fine.
