Unfortunately sounds like your fault. Contact your insurance and tell the truth they are working for you. I Had the colour coded bumper scraped by someone else's car and it cost over Â£300 to put right.

Any witnesses? I imagine they are trying it on, the car park is probably private property so they can not claim

Say you cant afford it and tell HIM to phone you insurers.
DO NOT contact yours. Let him do the work......if he even bothers.
If you tell you insurers and he doesnt claim, it'll still look bad for you. If he does, so be it.
A lot of people out there have friends in the repair business who can repair/spray cars on the cheap and this is why they do this.

Worth checking to see whether supermarket has CCTV if there is any question over the speed and damage caused. However, like others have already pointed out, it can be suprisingly expensive to damage a bumper nowadays and damage can occur behind the bumper, which wouldn't have been obvious

tell him you want to go through insurance as you don't have that kind of money as you only have Â£180 to spare.
Either he'll back down and take the Â£180 or go through insurance and all he gets is his car fixed

Best way to deal with this is to fill in an insurance claim form and let your Insurers sort it out. That way they will inspect the car and their engineer will be able to tell exactly what damage you did.

Once they have sorted it out you can ask your insurers how much the claim cost and you can repay them that money to reinstate your no claims bonus (you only lose it if you make a claim and so by paying them back you have not made a claim)

This is your best course of action because it puts it in the hands of experts, it will deter the other person if he is trying it on, and if you fail to advise them of the accident now they could well refuse to deal with it at a later date if you discover that the cost of repairs is more than you can afford.

Sadly Â£510 does not seem unreasonable these days for a 'scrape', paintsops at major dealers are expensive, and bumpers are considered a 'throw away' item in a lot of accidents. Plus the other party may well be aware that he can claim for out of pocket expenses and a hire car whilst his car is off the road.

Incidentally the fact it was a car park does not mean he cannot make a claim as someone else suggested earlier, regardless of where an accident takes place the person who caused the damage is liable if they can be traced (and you have been)

Some fatherly advice: go ahead and call your insurance company. If you don't, it will result in MUCH more expense than any minor rise in premiums. They are experts in determining prior or bogus damages and can handle the situation. Peace of mind is worth more than a premium increase....
