Car Insurance Whilst Living Abroad?

I am going to be working abroad in South Korea and will be classed as non resident in the UK.I own a car which will be left in the UK until I come back and I want to keep it insured so it can be run periodically to keep it in good order.
The problem is that my insurance company says that you have to be resident in the UK for them to insure the vehicle. I could insure it as a second family car in my fathers name but this does not get over the problem of me having the insurance to drive it when I am visiting the UK.
This is a pain as the Insurance company will have minimal risk as the car will only be driven to and from a garage at relevant service intervals and once or twice a month round the local area to keep the car in good condition.
Also, I currently have full protected no claims bonus of 7 years. How long can I be out of the UK before I will lose this no claims bonus.
Does anyone know a way round this problem ie an insurer that will supply me cover on the vehicle.
I want to be straight with the insurance company as this could cause me problems when I come back in the event of an accident.

Dad should, indeed, insure it in his name as he will be the principal user during your absence. It matters not who is the legal owner or whose name is on the V5, it is the main user who needs to be insured. He can add you as a "named driver" for your visits home.
I'd be inclined to sort this out in good time before you leave, just so you can answer any questions the insurers may have.
Regarding the no claims bonus, most insurers will accept evidence from up to 2 years ago, some may accept longer and some less. |
