Car Insurance question....?

My friend told me that since i have comprehensive cover on my car, i am allowed to drive my dad's car with his permission and i would have 3rd party fire and theft cover. Is this true?

Thanks for your help.

We are insured by different companies.

He also has comprehensive cover.

You would actually have third party cover only, unless it says otherwise on the policy. Also, there may be exclusions related to the age of other drivers.

My own policy allows other drivers to use my car, but only if they are 21 or over. Some policies have 25 as the minimum age.

Check the certificate for the correct details and any relevant exclusions.

Watch out with this one, this used to be the case as standard a few years back but with rising insurance costs and risks (probably so many personal injury claims etc..) most companies have stopped offering this. You need to check the policy wording doc carefully.
If you have a specific journey to make in your dad's car, you can call your company and they can insure you fully comp on his car for a day at a time for a small charge... then you won't need to worry about backing into a lamp post in it and only being third party!! Good luck :)

Check the wording on your inurance certificate, some insuance companies dont give this extension to under 30's or if you work in the motor trade.

Best think to do is call your insurance company and check then call your Dads company and check. I find this way you always have a record of checking as most telephone calls are now recorded.

If you have the extension its third party only which bascically is the minimum cover by law to use a vehicle on the road. You are not covered for fire or theft or if you have an accident that is your fault you are not covered for the damage you make to your dads car.

Check your insurance certificate. Comprehensive insurance usually covers you for third party only (not fire and theft) for cars not belonging to you if you're not covered by any other insurance. However, some don't - especially the one with the red phone on wheels.

If your policy states that you may drive another vehicle, you will be insured for that vehicle at the minimum requirements of the road traffic act (= third party only)

you wont be covered for theft, or fire.

You need to read your policy as it depends on your insurance company and policy cover levels.

That's correct. You can drive any other car with the owner's permission and be covered

Every insurance company is different, for the official answer contact your insurance company and ask them.

My old company offered it, but the new one I'm with doesn't include it.

For car insurance the quickest method to get a cheap quote is do a car policy comparison. Be sure to choose the same coverage levels, you can get an fast quote to compare against others. Use the same coverage area, auto make/model, mileage and driving history to make sure you get accurate comparison. To get easy auto insurance quotes, go to http://www.simpleautoquotes.com/Auto-Insurance.html and you can compare all the major auto insurance companies.

Check your insurance policy and ignore what people say about Direct Line. I was insured until recently via Direct Line, and I was fully comprehensive. This clearly gave me the right to drive another car, with the owners permission. However, the one qualification is that I would be driving with third party cover only.
