Renew it online and print out the receipt that you get when you pay, display the receipt in the car until your disc arrives. this is sufficient proof should anyone ask

All you need is. renewal notice, Insurance certificate and MOT if vehicle is over 3 years old.

There is no 14 days grace car MUST be taxed from 1st of month

Neil
You need either the log book or the renewal notice, but not both.
You will also need your insurance certificate and, if the car is over 3 years old (4 in Northern Ireland), your MOT certificate.

However, you should have done this before the end of last month. In theory you could be fined under the "continuous licensing" legislation for not having a valid tax disc yesterday.

Bardic
If you do it online now, the MoT and insurance are checked electronically then a disc is posted out to you.

There is now an exemption for the first 5 working days from displaying the disc, to allow for the postal system. However, this ONLY applies if you re-tax on or before the expiry date of the old one - you haven't, so technically you could be "done" for not displaying a valid tax disc.

You can trot along to the post office with your completed V11 reminder, valid insurance certificate and MoT (if you need one) and do it on the spot. You don't need your driving licence.

Mas
You will also need your insurance and MOT cert before you can renew it. The renewal form should be enough.

You don't need the logbook, just the MOT and insurance certificate.

If you do it online it will be taxed strait away

If you have the renewal form (sent to you by the DVLA) this has a bar code number on it and you do not need your logbook (V5) only your certificate of insurance and MOT certificate if your car needs one.

If you retax on line you cannot be prosecuted for not having Road Tax, you will have. BUT there is the entirely separate offence of failing to display a current tax disc, i would play safe and take the bus.

no you wont, as you will be driving without a disc and if you do it online it takes 5 days or so to come through.
i know because i have done it. now you could take a chance and if pulled by the police tell them that you have bought it it just has not arrived yet and they can check with the dvla straight away.
the post office might do it if you have your renewal form. if you get a nice person!

MickeyT
You can use a V62 application for a log book, they'll have these forms at the post office. These always used to be free but the last time I checked (not recently) they'd starting charging £25 for them. Unless you can find the log book this is the only way you can do it. Make sure you've got your MOT certificate and insurance certificate with you. You may be able to use the renewal notice but I can't be sure about that, I'd expect that they'd still need to see the log book.

EDIT: You may be able to do it online but remember that failure to display a tax disc is an offense for which you could be prosecuted. Don't park anywhere where traffic wardens go, the police themselves would check their database, see that you're taxed and maybe let you off.

Hello

First of all you do not get 14 days grace any more as to many people abused it.
If you have the renewal notice you can do it on line.
Once you have done that it will not show up as no Tax on police cameras etc.
So unless you are very unlucky no problems.
For the Post Office you require Insurance Certificate, Log Book and MOT.
So they will not be able to do it tomorrow or until you find the Log Book.

you can tax your car by fone or on the internet, as long as you have the renewal form. You can still use your car tomorrow, you have 14 days to get your disc from the post office, if you do it by fone or internet it will come thru the post in a few days.
