Car accident, no insurance in CA

I was in a car accident without insurance in a target parking lot. We exchanged information, me giving him my expired insurance info. Long story short the insurance company found me and sent a $2000 invoice to my address from a 3rd party debt collecting company. They also sent a letter to the DMV saying I had no insurance at the time of the accident and should be investigated. The DMV has contacted to me send a SR 1 form. My question is what ramifications am I looking at, being a first time offender? If my license is suspended, can the length be less than a year?
