Car accident 3 cars involved am i at fault! UK LAW?

i had a small prang today and there was three cars invovled me at the back a BMW in the middle and a toyota rav at the front. we were going down a hill and went to press my brake but it hissed at me and went hard and wouldnt work so i hit the back of the BMW doing about 10mph he then hit the car in front ( not very hard) and i was wondering will i be at fault if the front of his car is damaged because of him being to close the car in front when stopped. i saw no damaged to either of the cars, took photos and everything unfortantley my bonnet got crumplled and broke both lights. am i at fault for any damage for the front of his car.
p.s i couldnt get a good look or picture of the front of his car because his car was touching the car infront. thank you for any answer and please put the source thank you.

can i add that isnt it his fault for being too close to the car in front when your supposed to be 1 car length away i prob pushed him half a meter forward thats my argument plus i wasnt going fast enough to cause any damaged to the back of his car so if he wasnt close to car in front my car would be the only damaged one

your brakes failed but its still your fault as your car was the cause of the accident..the car in front's insurance payes for the car in front of his,your insurance pays for the damage to the car you hit,no one elses...its just one of those things,at least no one was hurt.

....its also a law that every car has to have a 2 second gap to the one in front...but if its held to the leter of the law every car driver in the world would be in court.

Having been in the unpleasant situation of being stationary on the M1 in traffic jam and hit up the rear by a Renault van doing nearly 50mph the fault was put fair and square on the van driver for hitting me and the three cars I dominoed into. btw an Audi 100 is good car to be in if you have a rear end shunt.

I'll preface this by admitting that I am in the United States, but it occurred to me that you perhaps could answer this question on your own by simply imagining yourself as the driver of the BMW.

Imagine you were in the BMW and the accident happened. Who do you think is responsible for the damage to the Toyota now?

you have no legal argument ....both cars can claim from you ..

You are at fault and responsible for the damage to all cars.

You hit someone in the rear initially - that is your fault even if it was a fault on your car.
Because of this the middle car was pushed into the other car. This would not have happened if you had not caused the accident in the first place.

Basically, the other drivers insurance companies will claim from you.

Vehicles that are stopped can be as close or as far away from each other as they want. There is no law, legal rule or requirement that dictates vehicle distances that are stopped. Your vehicle doing 10 MPH pushed the BMW into the Toyota, which MIGHT have been prevented had their been greater space between them (you have no idea how much space their actually was), however that same amount of space would not have saved the BMW/Toyota collision if it was a fully loaded dump truck that hit the BMW at 10 MPH. This is why you can't regulate such a thing.

Here in the US it's probably the same they meaning the BMW and the RAV can go after your insurance anyway.No damage seen at pix,

As you were the rearmost car you will be deemed to be at fault - no need for anymore waffle, just leave it to your insurer to sort out.

Are you in a breakdown service like the AA. or what about your insurance does that cover you for legal issues? If so use their legal eagles to help with this. I am no expert but is it not a requirement of the Highway code to leave at least a vehicles gap in front of you? If so then the BMW driver will also be at fault as well as yourself.
