Car accident. No insurance.?

It's usually the driver who is responsible. If his cousin knew s/he was going to be driving an uninsured (and unregistered) vehicle, the cousin is liable.

That said, anyone can sue anyone for anything, and your bf is likely to get sued over this. So, it's probably going to cost him some money. Maybe a whole lot.

Allowing someone to drive his unregistered and uninsured vehicle was foolhardy, since if anything happened, the vehicle could have been impounded and need to be gotten out ($$$), or something like an accident, as did happen (more $$$).

The owner of the car is responsible unless the car was stolen. If it was stolen, he has to file a police report. Don't do this just to get out of the accident responsibility because the police will investigate & if he files a false police report, he would be in huge trouble for that & will still be responsible for the accident.
If the car was truly stolen, his cousin will have to go to court & could go to jail for it.
Sounds like someone will be in a mess over this one. Your boyfriend if the car was not stolen, as the owner will be liable to pay for all damages to the other car & all injuries resulting from the accident.
If your bf & his cousin live together, or his cousin has borrowed the car before, there is implied permission, so the vehicle would never be considered stolen. The only thing he may have in his favor is if he specifically told his cousin NOT to use it because it is uninsured & unregistered & he would have to prove this.

As the owner, your friend will be responsible for the damage and any injury claim. Find out if the cousin had insurance available to him, either his own or that of a household member. It is possible he may have liability coverage that will kick in as excess primary.

Your boyfriend might be held liable for any damage the accident has caused to other cars or people involved in the accident. Sadly, this incident could wipe out your financial assets. May be subjected to a criminal prosecution and charged with fines or worse, serve jail time.

IF he PERMITTED his cousin to drive the car, YES he is up to his eyeballs in it.

The ONLY way for him to extricate himself from this predicament is to claim that his cousin STOLE the car (and file a proper police report to that effect) and he had no knowledge of the theft until AFTER the accident.

Somebody's head will roll. Will it be your BF's OR his cousin's. The TRUTH of the matter will determine WHOSE head goes into the guillotine.
