Car accident with no insurance?

I just got into an accident (he swerved into my lane and hit me, I wasn't at fault) and don't have insurance (it's my boyfriend's car). I was going to get insurance this week once I had some money from working, but obviously that didn't work out to my advantage. I filed a claim on his insurance.. The cop didn't give me a ticket for not having insurance? I don't really know what's going on, the company is coming to appraise my car in a few days.. What should I expect next?

--If you are just going to say I should have had insurance then please do not bother answering. That's not what I'm asking.

I thought the cop would give me a ticket right there, but he just took down my info and said to file it... I am absolutely lost as to what's going on.

You don't own the car, so you don't need insurance. Your boyfriend does.That's why you didn't get a ticket. If you drive the car on a regular basis or you live with him, you should be named on his policy.
The at-fault driver's insurance company should pay for the repairs on your car and pay for a rental car while it's being repaired (up to 30 days).

You have 30 days to notify the insurance company of a new car to be added to the policy. If you get in an accident within the 30 days, most insurance companies will cover it. They will back-date the change though so you will have to pay for insurance during that 30 days.

OK, this is how it works in the UK, and I'm guessing that the US system is pretty similar. Not really sure if you mean that you claimed on your boyfriends insurance or the person who hit you. It shouldn't matter whether you have insurance or not as you should be claiming from the insurance company of the person who hit you as you aren't at fault. If you haven't already, make sure you give them a call and give them all the details (including the police incident number if you can), as you won't be covered on your boyfriend's insurance. When they come to appraise your car it's just to get the scale of the damage. It'll be done by an engineer who'll decide whether the car is a write-off or the scale of the damage if its not. If it's not a write-off then they'll tell the insurance company, who'll contact you and arrange to get it booked into a garage. If it is a write-off then they'll phone you to offer a price.

The other insurance should pay for your car. But all I have to say about you not having insurance is be thankful they didn't give you a ticket and impound your car. Count your lucky stars and I hope you learned something from this.

The car itself is what's insured, regardless of who was driving it. If your boyfriend had insurance on that car, then you are good. That's why you didn't get a ticket, because the car is insured.

I'n not sure what happens in this situation. I was sure you also had to have insurance to be able to make a claim, whether it was it on your policy or his.
