I need to renew the registration for my vehicle. I recently moved to a different state (NC to CA) but haven't changed my insurance or anything because I am under my parents coverage. Can I take the inspection in california and do the renewal online? I guess I don't have a choice of doing the inspection but would like to know if I can do it online or would I have to mail the inspection?

Errrr.. to do an inspection they actually have to SEE the car. If you have all moved to another state you will have something like 6 months to get new registration which means a new inspection. The auto insurance is something else entirely. So, go take your existing paperwork to a California DMV and do the registration for your new address, then once you have the registration card, go to a California inspection station and get it inspected.
You will probably not be able to do the registration online because it involves a change of state, but you can always call to find out.
The auto insurance policy is a separate matter entirely. You just have to prove you have coverage. Your parents should be taking care of making any necessary changes in the insurance policy. A change in carrier would be required if the existing company is not licensed to do business in California. |

If you are moving from NC to CA you will have to register your vehicle in CA. This means you will have to go your local DMV office turn in your NC plates and get your CA plates. They will also probably do a vehicle inspection and have you do a smog test. Hopefully the vehicle will have the proper emission controls on it including a catalytic converter. You can't do any of this online because you can't get your CA plates unless you turn in your NC plates. |
