I was in a car accident the other day (rear ended) and was found not to be at fault, however there was substantial damage to my car. This is the first time I have been involved in a car accident. I swapped information with the other person and made a police report. My question now is how the insurance side of this works.
Do I have to inform my (or her) insurance company of the accident? Will my insurance increase if I do inform them of this (even though I was not at fault)? How long do insurance companies usually take to pay out? Any advice on how to get the most money to repair the damage?
Any information on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Have you heard from the other driver's insurance company?
Yes, you should report it to your company ASAP, and no, your premium should not go up, since you weren't at fault. You may be required to make a report to the PD or DMV with your insurance verified; your agent should be able to help with this.
If you don't hear from the other company quickly, you can call their claims department directly, or make a claim with any agent for the company. |
