how does an insurance company get notified when you get your license suspended? or if you get a restricted license?

Most standard (low-risk) insurance companies don't routinely check your driving record because of the cost--up to $30 a pop, but they do check at some point, and will see the suspension or restriction then. High-risk companies may check more often. At that point, it will probably cancel the policy. The DMV normally doesn't send such info to the company unless there's an SR-22 involved. |

In Arkansas, the insurance companies and DMV contact each other. When I got my new plates, I took my proof of insurance with me. They stated, they already had my insurance info on file. |

Actually, I think it is the other way around. It was for me, anyway.
I had a car that I gave up to another person. Therefore, I did not have insurance on that vehicle. The insurance company notified the licensing bureau and my license got suspended for not having insurance on that vehicle which I no longer owned. I had to prove that I didn't own the vehicle so that my license could be restored to me without any suspensions.
But, when you apply for insurance, it is easy for them to check your license to see if it is good or not.
A restricted license should say right on it whether there is a restriction and what that restriction is for. Mine has a restriction because I have to wear corrective lenses whenever I drive. It is plainly marked on my license. |

It depends on your insurance company. A lot of insurers are running Motor Vehicle Reports more often. Depending on when your policy renews your insurance company may run your MVR - if it shows that your license is suspended, restricted or revoked you'll receive a non-renewal notice before your renewal date. The Department of Motor Vehicles usually do not notify the insurance company of a suspended/restricted licensed. It's private and privileged information |
