Shop around the various insurance companies asking for their tables of various rates on differing vehicles,diesel and petrol,then make your choice of vehicle from that info.You should also consider servicing and parts costs of the different makes and models.It is a minefield,but generally a small capacity petrol driven car/van is cheaper than the diesel due to costs of parts etc.The mercedes smart car does 82 mpg,lovelly,but what do the parts,servicing and insurance cost,its all one package when you have little money to spare.

Yes it is better to get an older car, as well as one that is NOT classified as "Classic" or "Sports". A 4dr car, usually anywhere from 1982-1996 would probably be cheapest. My suggestion (mom of 4 w/3 driving) is to look at about 4 used (older) cars, write down the make/model/year and mileage and call the insurance company. They can pretty well give you a figure over the phone. It also depends on whether or not you think the car is worth having comprehensive coverage or merely 'collision' coverage. Speak with the insurance company about the different coverage types as well.

Get a car with a low engine size like a 1.0 - 1.3 litre.

My first car was a Clio and it was a 2000 plate. My insurance was really cheap as I was insured under my dads name. If you have this option, go for it! You will save lots of money. I now have a 2009 plate Suzuki Swift which is alot cheaper to insure. Try directline insurance as you are getting 10 months for the price of 12 at the moment. I don;t think the age of the cra makes much difference - If its old its more likely to break down... if it's new it costs more to fix etc etc.

Oh and p.s. im the same age as you... when your 21- which I am in 6 weeks - your insurance cost will go right down as well.
