If you are not driving now, and have sold your vehicle you can cancel your insurance cover and ask for a refund on your premium.
The thing to watch is the direct debit, if you pay this way then renewal is automatic unless you intervene to stop it.
You can either contact your insurer now and cancel or wait for the renewal papers and return the certificate of insurance telling them that you no longer need insurance.
If you still have a vehicle then you cannot keep it on a public road without insurance, whether you drive it or not.

if you request cancellation at any time other than the renewal day, you may be charged a penalty; better to let it expire. if it's on direct deposit, call the agent/company and tell them to take it off .. If it already drafted, you can get a refund-if, and this is important-don't cancel it by request until after it cancels for nonpay. it can be backdated. -you have used fewer days of insurance than you paid for.

You don't have to tell them but if you tell them at the time that you are not renewing, you will probably get a letter of confirmation of any no claims bonus that you have accrued, for future use.

I would take a slightly different approach if you plan on driving again down the road when your money situation has improved.

Call the insurance company and tell them you are putting the vehicle into storage and that you would like to adjust your policy accordingly. They will offer you a comprehensive deductible option, take the highest deductibe they offer.

The reason to take this approach is later down the road when you do start driving again you are able to say that you have had insurance the whole time and avoid being surcharged. This type of coverage typically runs less that $50 per year and it provides coverage for you if your vehicle is stolen, vandalized, or damaged in some other way while not being driven. Without coverage, in the event that a fire occurs, the entire cost to repair/replace the vehicle falls on you.

this program may or may not be available in your area, so check with your coverage provider.
