My roommate is looking into getting a car and wants to give me access to driving it. Do we need to get 2 seperate insurance policies to drive the car. How does insurance on a car work?

Insurance is on the vehicle. The owner is considered a driver and covered, you can be added to the policy on the vehicle as an additional driver. |

One state I lived in required that you put all license drivers on your insurance policy that lived in your household. I questioned why, and they said, that it was a great possibiliy that someone living in the same house, would probally drive the vehicle. If only if a life or death situation. |

No, the registered owner would get the insurance, and add you as a part time driver, to his policy. The premium may change, depending on your driving record, if you have a driving record that is less than stellar, your roomate might reconsider adding you to the policy. |

No. The owner gets the policy, and lists you as a driver. They would list themselves as a driver, also. |

i dont know what state u live in but i do know in MA that if someone from the same household drives ur car and they dont have ins. then they can refuse to pay if the non insured driver gets into a crash so i would suggest that u could just get on ur roommate ins. policy |

Whoever owns the vehicle will carry the insurance. You would be covered as a "Permissive Operator." But usually those liability limits are lower, maybe even state minimum. It would be best to have your own policy if you want higher limits. Check with your roommates company to see what their limits are. |

Anyone can be put on the insurance, who ever the car belongs to has to get the insurance than put you on it.
the rate will go up for more drivers but its cheaper than two policies. |
