Car insurance in the USA, for foreigners / tourists?

im 18years old, and hopefully after my exams in may, i hope to go to america to visit a couple of friends.
My mates have put forward the idea of a possible roadtrip in his car. Its his car, and im assuming its insured. However since its a roadtrip, i will also probably need to drive, in which case how do i sort this out??
can i drive on his insurance, as long as i tell his insurance company or is it more complicated than that. I've been told than unlike car insurance in the UK, Americans insure the DRIVER, rather than the car.
i have a full UK license, and dont mind if i have to get a international driving permit, but how do i figure out this insurance problem.

You were told wrong. In the U.S insurance follows the car. As an adult licensed driver (albeit U.K.) you would be a permissive driver under your friends insurance policy. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get an international permit. You might be going through some small town that doesn't know the difference.Welcome and enjoy.r |

Ask him to check with his insurance company, but most insurance policies cover "guest drivers". However, the fact that you are only 18 may be a problem. It really all depends on the company. |

Insurance goes with cars, and generally if you are driving with the permission of the owner of the car, you are covered. However some companies do restrict drivers to age 25 or more, and since you are only 18 I would check with insurance first to make sure you are covered. If you are not, don't drive. |

For auto insurance the best way to get a great rate is do a rate comparison on car policies. Make certain that you compare similar policies with the same limits, car make, location, etc so that all things are a good comparison.
What I most often recommend is an online comparison quote at http://www.InsureAutoNow.info since they have discount insurers and can give several prices on car insurance polices. |
