Car insurance on a Spitfire (UK)?

I was wondering if anyone could give me a rough estiminate on the cost of insurance for a Triumph Spitfire (1973,1.3L). Just got my licencse,and im 17,so i know it's going to be a tad steep :). thanks for the help. By the way, i have already tried insurance comparision sites, and they don't seem to work for me,so no links to them please.

Insurance comparison sites will not quote for you because at 17, you are an uninsurable risk for a classic sports car. A specialist young driver company is going to quote you around two grand for that insurance.

I doubt if anyone will insure you. Even if you could find one you would be looking in the region of £5000. Go get an old banger that's in a low insurance group, and save the Spitfire till you grow up i.e. over 25, with max no claims bonus. |

If you get a third party only I am not sure why it should be expensive to (third party only) insure a car that (when new) had a top speed of less than my fiat punto (which is cheap to insure).
Your actual model *might* do 75mph for a while (unless it's the single carb and I bet it is) but I'd stay at 60mph if you want to keep it alive, phone them and explain that you'll be overtaken by scooters on the Mways..
Btw I am not being detrimental to the car, just being realistic.. |

Do not bother with on line insurance quotes, they tend to cater for the " bread & butter " mass market cars. As others have said, your age & lack of experience will go against you. Go for a small capacity 1st car, build up your driving record. You should go to a local motor insurance agent, and explain what type of insurance you need, if they can't help, they should be able to point you in the right direction. Another idea would be to contact the Triumph Spitfire / GT6 owners club as they have access to cheaper Classic Car insurance brokers. Enjoy one of Britains most popular classic sports cars while you still can. Rear wheel drive is sadly becoming a thing of the past unfortunately !! |
