Car title signature is whited out?

I am buying a car from my friend. He has the title with everything correctly filled out only his "seller signature and printed name" was previously whited out. I realize this is a problem but have no idea how to go about getting this taken care of. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated so i can be more prepared for this.

Run a title search to find out who's name is on the title.If you try to take that title in that condition to DMV,they'll reject it.Titles must be legible and unaltered.If your friend used white out on it,DMV will require him to get a new title first.

White out voids a car title. He'll have to go get another title. Don't buy the car until he does and can prove the vehicle is his to sell.

This "white out" is illegal and it is not your problem, it is the sellers problem. DO NOT fork over a cent until.unless you are provided a valid title. Run, do not walk away from this "deal" now !!!

In California Start with an error statement REG 101 to explain the whiteout. But white out on a title is serious only because the DMV doesn't know who did the whiting out....so the title is now voided.
Get a REG 227 Duplicate for title and REG 262 Application for transfer from the DMV and both seller and buyer need to fill out and sign...you are basically starting over.
You will pay an extra $15 for using the REG 227 (your friend should pay it)
You can do this at a DMV or AAA Auto Club.
