Do I need to buy it to tow the caravan? or is it just for theft. Do I have to tell my motor car insurance company I'm going to tow a caravan?

Normally your car insurance covers you for third party liability and theft if stolen with the car, since it is all part of the "vehicle"
but its worth checking your policy.
Also depending on when you passed your test you might not have the correct licence for towing a caravan or trailer.
As for insurance for the caravan, personally I would not bother just keep a wheel-clamp on it, don't leave anything valuable in it, and always keep a fire extinguisher and fire blanket in it., but this would depend on the value of your caravan :-) |

IN GENERAL, and you need to verify this as to your company, trailers in tow are covered for liability, and you can get comp/coll/theft also. and you should tell them, just to verify the above. |

i insure my caravan and contents separately from car insurance
then i know if things go bad i will get paid out, have done this for 25 years |

You don't need separate insurance for your caravan to be on the road. It wouldn't hurt to make a call to your insurance company and tell them you are towing. If you intend to keep your caravan on a site or in storage when not in use, you will most likely be asked to produce caravan insurance. In my experience caravan insurance is pretty hard to find unless you join either the Camping and Caravaning Club or The Caravan Club and get it through them. It also becomes cheaper this way. |
