Cheap car insurance safe to have?

I'm going to buy car insurance and the rates I'm getting are pretty low, $72.00 per month (Progressive) and $92.00 (Geico). But I picked the state's lowest minimum coverage that was available, and I was wondering if it's safe/okay to do that?

It's ok as long as you are not worried about fixing your car or your medical bills in an accident. Neither are covered with the low policy. You may want to try getting a full coverage quote online. I'm paying less than

You could probably add $20 extra for another $250.000 liability damage, it could be the best decision you take..

No...i dont recommend it...regardless of whether you are a good driver or not...accidents happen...and you dont want to be stuck with a policy that does not give you like a loaner car and has a very high deductible and does not cover other important things....

I wouldn't recommend it. In most states the minimum coverage is about $10,000. These days I'd guess most cars on the road average at least $20,000 and repairs are expensive. Even a short stay in a hospital can can cost more than $10,000. Anything your insurance doesn't cover you will have to pay out of pocket. Are you prepared to have your paycheck garnished or your bank account cleaned out? A really serious accident and you could be paying for the rest of your life. Your decision.

If you're a totally safe driver, then go for it.
I'd probably do the same.

This is a topic that can produce dozens of responses, depending on who answers and their occupation and/or level of income and the bottom line, the car itself. Not to forget if you live in California vs South Dakota, There is a real big difference in volume of traffic in Los Angeles verses a rural countryside having significantly less.
But assuming you live in an average city, the bottom line is the value of your car and also if yu have other medical insurance which can be used for injuries sustained in an auto accident.

Without too many details, the minimum insurance rarely pays for the replacement value of your car, but i financed the lender usually wants the states minimum level maintaned,or have a preset requirement, If you own the car outright , Who Cares? Except remember your insurance may not replace your loss in full or sometimes with minimums not at all. Additionally if the other driver does not have insurance, even if its their fault, you lose again and thats why uninsured motorist coverage is a little costly, but if a quality car, you need it. and in many cases the other driver may take off and your left with the total repair or replacement cost yourself, and no help by the cheap insurances. While California has this 15/30 standard everyone uses, most people find that to increase to 50/100,000 or 100,000/300,000 coverage is nt much more, check it out and you will see, But as usual insurance companies dont tell you that the higher coverage is so little more than the minimum. Also consider how uch you drive, if female and dating, probably not much, as compared to a male taking his date here and there. But also remember the medical costs, a serious injury from an auto wreck can cost thousands and thousands. A simple hip replacement due to destruction of the "hip joint" is usually about 140,000.00. So if no medical insurance, you should consider a better grade auto insurance with good medicial coverage for you and you passengers, and don't think your friends or their parents wont sue you for costs and damages, Therefore the first two companies may be a better choice in the long run, and especialy if a quality car with some worth to it. So go over the costs and choices again, although it may reduce going out every friday night , or spending without care as you may do, a little less of this and more insurance goes a long long ways, and prevents long term medical, property damages etc. Just look at how many people across the country refused to buy flood insurance, as this event is so rare in some areas, and now after a flood, the have no home and only the debt which will burden them a long time , restricting many opportunities in their futures verses having good insurance and missing out on an occasional night out in costs. And it doesn't matter if you are the best driver in the world, because that means the other guy is not the best. and probably doesn't have insurance either, good luck, pay a little now and prevent possibly total losses later,(Oh, didnt spell check ,sorry)

Minimum coverages don't give you all that much protection. I don't know what state you are in, but let's say you're in a state where the minimum property damage liability coverage is $10k. If you have an accident where you hit somebody and their car hits someone else, and it's your fault, you could be looking at $25k in liabilities. If your insurance only covers 10k, the rest is on you. I recently saw a claim where the insured had the minimum 5k PD coverage, and they had an at-fault accident involving another car and a gas station (the insured backed into someone at a gas pump and started a fire). They were on the hook for over 50k in damages.

In short, get the best coverage you can afford.

not really considering typical new pickup is 30000+ car is about same suv 40000+. Plus there are alot of 50000 to 100000 cars out there. you decide if its worth the chance.

Cheap is OK unless you cause a wrongful death and you get sued for $8,000,000. Then it's not so good.

Yeah. That is what most people do honestly, the only time some choices might have to be changed are if you are leasing the vehicle. Than you have to work with the leasing company and what their minimum requirements are, which are normally a little higher than the states.

If you afford the higher coverage, it's better for you in case of an accident. Also, check with Allstate - we have had them for 4 years and the rates keep dropping !! Look around online for more quotes B4 buying
