Cheaper insurance?

I'm 16 1/2 years old and will be getting my license in two weeks. I don't plan on driving regularly; in fact, I plan on driving AT MOST about 4-5 times a month just to get to social events. I qualify for the good student discount but even then, insurance costs a lot. Do insurance companies have any discounted rates for if you are only an occasional driver? Is there any way that I get a rate that's cheaper than $1500 a year? Also, if I don't get insurance, will I still be insured if I drive with my dad sitting in the passenger seat next to me?

If you are talking about your own car, have it titled in both your's and your dad's name and be listed as a part time driver under his insurance. Mine has never gone up more than $4-$500 with my children, that was on junkers. Now both have new with full coverage and still both are under $525 a year.

Your age is a primary factor in the cost of insurance. That you drive only 4-5 times per month will not be considered.

An additional discount maybe available if you can demonstrate that you have passed a driver's safety course.

The rate may be more affordable if your parents agree to include you on their insurance policy. That your father is in the car when you drive, will have no effect on the policy rate.

I would say get a safe beater, and get a liability coverage only. Apply all the discounts you can get, but do stay with big insurance companies. Small companies are known to refuse to pay for damages when you do get into a major accident.

Well, sure, you're probably getting them . .but it ONLY works if someone ELSE in your household is a PRIMARY operator. Example, if there are three licensed drivers in the house, and three cars, ALL THE DRIVERS WILL BE PRIMARY. You have to have one more driver than car, in order for a driver to be classified as "occasional".

MOST insurance companies have a little clause in their policy that says all household members with a license must be listed on the policy, or else they don't have to pay. So, no, you would NOT be insured just because your dad is sitting next to you. You would need to be listed on the policy.
