What is necessary to get a Class B in Massachusetts? I see there are tons of places offering classes to train you for it, for a fee, but are those classes necessary to get the license?
I've driven straight trucks for a few years requiring only a DOT physical, and I'm very comfortable behind the wheel of anything but tractor-trailers. So to jump from that, to actually having my class B, could i just show up at the DMV, pass the written and road tests... or are they going to want some kind of classroom certificate?

i don't know how it is in Mass but here in North Carolina you have to get the CDL permit first and then go for the license, you do the written tests for the permit and then just the road, backing and pre trip tests to get the license, for my class A i had to take those and also a coupling and uncoupling test for the trailer, also here we don't have class A or B trucks at the DMV so you have to supply your own, if you need the permit first im sure you can just get the permit and then the license in the same day since you don't have to have a CDL permit for a certain time, also if your Mass DMV doesn't have their own trucks to give test you'll have to bring your own which means someone with a CDL license has to go with you or drive the truck if you don't have the premit yet and it has to be a class B CDL truck not a straight truck that doesn't require a CDL, but if your DMV does have their own trucks then i see no real problem with you going up there and getting the permit and then license all in the same day, only thing is that you'll have to know the pre trip inspection good so you should look at the CDL manual and read the pre trip inspection part because if you don't pass the pre trip inspection test you won't get the license, but good luck |
