Confused about Car Insurance! Please help!?

My dad said im covered under him.(im 17) he also says im insured but its not my name?!?! i dont understand he says hes only paying 150 dollars for insurance... i thought it would be a lot more because im a teenager

i think that the car insurance is under him and instead of me.... he told me if i get in an accident just tell the cops that it's my dad car and i was just driving it?!?!? what happens if i actually get into an accident what would happen?

As long as the car is insured you won't have a problem with the police if you get stopped. Just show them the registration and insurance card. If your father really doesn't have you listed on the policy as an additional driver and you are involved in an accident your father might have problems because the insurance company might refuse to pay for repairs or could have his insurance canceled. Either way you're in the clear.

Actually depending on where you live $150 per month for insurance probably does cover you. Most adults with a good driving record pay less than $50 per month for insurance.

The cost of insurance depends on many factors. The insurance company will charge more if there are as many cars as drivers, and will charge less if there are not. A teen who is allowed to drive a parent's car on occasion, when the parent is not using it, is less expensive to insure than one that has a car available to them at all times. The type of car also has a role. A mini-van is less expensive to insure than a Camaro.

I am sure that your father has added you to the policy, assuming that you live with him. If you do not live in his household (due to a divorce or other situation) and there is no exclusion on his policy for underage drivers, you are covered as an occasional driver. Only members of the household have to be listed on the policy.

Did he provide you with an insurance card physically listing your car year, make, model and vin if so then you do have insurance if not then ask for a insurance card that you should have anyway.

It cannot be in your name since you are too young to own a car. It must be under the owner's name. You Dad has you listed as a covered driver. It is probably $150 a month he is paying which is a lot. You must have proof of insurance in the car at all times also.
