Could i insure myself as a provisional driver in my own car?
Find answers to your legal question.

Could i insure myself as a provisional driver in my own car?

My grandma has offered to buy me a car when i pass my driving test, but spoke to me the other day and said she would consider buying me the car now so i can practise in it and hopefully pass my test a bit quicker. I know i can only drive the car if i have someone over the age of 21 with a valid driving licence in the car with me but how would I insure the car? Can you get an insurance policy out as a provisional driver or would i have to get someone else with a full licence (i.e. one of my parents) to insure themselves in the car and put me down as a named driver? How would it work and is it worth getting the car now when i have to tax it and insure it but cant drive it, or should i just wait til i've passed my test? Cheers x

Everyone has given you very good advice so far so there is not really much I can add. What I will say is, although you can put the car in your name and insure it as a provisional licence holder, it will cost a lot more than putting it under your mum or dads name and having you as a named driver. The best thing do to is spend some time getting quotes on confused.com (you will probably find Quinn Direct comes up with the cheapest quote) and keep changing the details to find out your best options. Make sure you get quotes BEFORE buying a car, you don't want to end up buying a car that is too expensive to insure. From my experience your insurance will be cheaper now than when you pass your test.

Also, just wanted to make sure you know that the person supervising you needs to have held their full licence for at least three years (in addition to being over 21).

yes you can

No problem, any motor insurer will cover you as a provisional driver, you don't have to nominate anyone else specifically. Strangely, you may find it cheaper while you're a learner than when you pass your test - that's because you have to have the experienced driver with you, which you lose when you're out on your own.

Good luck.

Yes u can.I did it with my car and because i took out my own policy in my name i also received 1 years no claim bonus. It is definitely worth it

Yes, you'll have no problem insuring it as a provisional licence holder, it's not much dearer than insuring a new full licence holder. It'll work out cheaper to insure it & use it for practice rather than pay for dozens of lessons - you can pass easily within a couple of months with one lesson a week & plenty of driving time in between.

Yes Bardic is correct - the only thing i would say is that in my experience your insurance WILL be cheaper as a provisional driver, and will go up substantially when you pass your test.

I would therefore check (on the comparison websites) the price if you had just passed your test - so that it is not a nasty shock when you phone them up all happy that you've passed (happened to my g/f!)

Also i suggest you check if the insurance company charges you admin fees if you were to change details. A lot of cheap insurance companies charge £25-£40 admin fee when you change car, address, add a new driver, or in your case - when you change licence situation!

As a general rule - the cheaper the insurance, the more hidden charges there are and the poorer the quality of the cover - so be careful! "all that glistens etc!"

Yes - its a great idea to insure your own car whilst you are learning.

I learnt on and off for a couple of years and earned two years NCD (no claims discount) whilst the car was sat on the driveway most of the time.

Having NCD really helps to bring the insurance premium down when you first pass your test.
