Car crashed into mailbox because of icy/snow road.
The car is fine. When I called the insurance company, they said it will be cheaper to pay out of pocket for the damaged property (mailbox).
However, when I called the mailbox owner afterward (because he was en route to work when it happened), he said that he already contacted a contractor to fix the mailbox situation.
The contractor told him that there will be a temporary mailbox installed until spring comes around because of the snow and frozen ground. So there will be TWO bills: one for the temporary one and one for the permanent one.
Am I responsible for both bills? If I am not happy with the estimate the contractor provided, do I have the right to contact another repair company? And is it possible to install the mailbox myself and what are the complications? What is the typical cost for such accident, if anyone knows...

Yes, you are responsible for both bills. The mailbox owner has the right to be "made whole" from the situation. That means they have the right to be put back into the same status financially that they were in before you killed his mailbox. If it takes two repairs by the contractor then it takes two repairs.
No you do not have the right to pick a different contractor.
It is not your property.
Would the mail box owner have the right to pick which shop you get your car fixed at?
If you contest it, the property owner will more than likely take you to court and you will end up loosing in court. Just take your bumps, pay the bills, and drive more carefully next time. |

Yes on both bills.
You have no right to dictate what company does the repair.
If the owner agrees to let you replace his mailbox.
Let's turn this around and see what happens.
I hit your car (for whatever reason)
Your car is almost drive-able but still damaged.
Your fender is rubbing against tire.
Your car is towed to local dealership so the fender can be bent away from tire. Car is now drive-able. Replacement fender is ordered.
Two weeks later and new fender arrives at dealer. Car dropped off and repaired.
Am I responsible for temporary fix and final repair? Or just one?
Can I tell you where to get repair done?
