First off, I want to say that I just got my license in MA and was planning on getting insurance in a week. I was driving in really heavy snow and I came to a T intersection that lead downhill .When I took the left turn, I started to slide and ended up hitting someone's mailbox. The car got stuck on the snowbank and a lot of nice people stopped to give me a hand. The house was empty because of a foreclosure but it turns out there were two mailboxes attached. The gentleman who owned the other mailbox came out and asked what happened. I apologized profusely and told him I would do everything to rectify the situation: pay for the mailbox and come by and install it for him (the mailbox was pretty cheap and was plastic). He insisted on getting insurance involved. Here comes the stupid part.... I wrote down my name and license plate, but crossed it out because it was messy and the pen ran out of ink. As the man walked inside to get another pen, I saw my opportunity and bolted. At the time I thought, "There is no way I am losing my license for school and work; plus its just a mailbox... I'll call him up later and send him a sorry note w/ money and see if he wants to do it informally". Well, the cops came by my house and said that I had to go to court. I had absolutely no intent to just "run away" nor lose my license/ have my insurance jacked through the roof.
Please help, give me some meaningful advice.

The only thing that matters is what you actually did.The world is filled with people and their good intentions.
First you say "....I don't have insurance", later you say "..have my insurance jacked through the roof". Do you have insurance or not? If you do, use it. Isn't that why we buy insurance? If you don't have it, you will have to pay to have the mailboxes fixed. You know it was wrong to run, now you will have to face the consequences. good luck |

You were driving without insurance - there are no excuses. Doesn't matter that you only hit a mailbox, the fact is you were driving illegally. How would you feel if instead of a mailbox you had hit a person?
I appreciate that you offered to pay for the mailbox repair/replacement but that was only to save yourself - you knew you were in the wrong.
The only thing you can do now is accept your punishment, and I just hope that you've had the sense to get Insurance in the interim. |

I'm delighted to hear that you got caught and will now pay a heavy fine, have your license suspended and have your insurance go through the roof. Perhaps you will tell your sad tale to others and induce some other SOBs without insurance to buy some.
My meaningful advice is don't ever drive without insurance again. |

You were driving without insurance, were involved in an accident, then left the scene of the accident. I just can't feel sorry for you. It is always more expensive when you run away. Now you will have to pay for the repair of the mailboxes, and either pay a hefty fine of have your license suspended. |

There's really no advise to give, you have to put yourself at the mercy of the court and the justice system. Now you have to stand up and take responsibility and suffer the consequences. The damage is done and it's a hard lesson learned. |
