DMV catch-22 regarding SR22 coverage! Please Advise?

My friend's license was suspended more than 5 years ago because of an at fault accident and driving without insurance while living in another state. They were told they needed to pay a fine to get it reinstated, but after they paid, got a letter saying they needed to send a form SR22 as proof of insurance. All of the websites we've tried need a license number and vehicle to create a quote. My friend needs insurance to get a license; needs a license and/or a vehicle to get insurance; needs insurance and a license to get a vehicle registered and tagged in this state; and cannot buy a vehicle until they can get it promptly tagged, registered, and insured to avoid further legal issues. Does anyone know the best way to go about clearing this whole mess up without creating additional problems, so I can give my friend some piece of mind until they can get hold of an insurance agent? It's the start of the weekend, and they're freaking out! Thanks.

OK, if he doesn't have a vehicle, he doesn't need a license. If you buy a car from a private party, you don't have to have a DL. In California you do not need a license to register a vehicle either. I didn't have a license (got suspended for .08 DUI) and my insurance company still insured me with a SR22 ( I am still not driving) can get my license back anytime though. I would go into a insurance company an speak to them in person. You can provide you license number from the other state and then go from there. |

He has a license, its simply revoked...
he needs to get the number of his license. The number always stays the same. |

your friend needs a non owners sr22 filing in order to get his license reinstated if he does not own a vehicle. If your freind does not have a license he should use his Identification Card # it will be the same as his drivers license # once it is issued. If he never had an id card he can get a temporary X number from the dmv until he gets a permanent license. Once your freind gets a license he can endorse the new vehicle onto his policy. hope this helps |

I don't know what web pages you are going to. None of the ones I'm aware of need anything more than your name and address, phone number and email address to get you a quote. http://www.sr22-insurance-filing.com/sr22-auto-insurance-quote.html for example, but there are more.
Any agent can get you an SR 22 insurance form for the state. Be aware it will be expensive, and you will probably have to continue with the high risk rates for 3 years.
