I'm in the process of buying a car, I don't want to register it in my name, so I have decided to declare it as SORN. Who is required to declare the car as SORN me or the seller and will it invalidate the car tax and mot as they have just been put on.

you still have to register it in your name whether it's on or off the road, SORN only means that the car is not taxed but it is off the public highway. if you declare the car as off the road it will invalidate your road tax.

why would you want to declare SORN if it's got an MOT and tax? sounds dodgy to me! |

You cannot declare SORN unless it is registered in your name. SORN is your legal declaration that the vehicle registered in your name is not kept or used on the public highway. If you're caught with the car on the road while SORN is in force you'Il be in serious trouble. It'll make no difference to the MoT. Once SORN is declared, you cannot put it on the road until you retax it, which defeats your object somewhat. Sounds rather suspicious that you don't want it in your name. |

Why do you not want to register it in your name? Is this just a ruse to not tax or insure this car? If the car is taxed why declare it is off the road? Seems to me you are up to no good. |

The registered keeper.. the person in who's name the car is registered.. the owner of the car |

Declaring SORN invalidates the car tax. If you buy a car with no tax it should be declared SORN by you if it is to be kept off road.. If the car is MOT'd already then you can tax it when you get the certificate of insurance even if it has no tax at present. MOT is not affected by SORN. |

Hi, Are you still going to use the car? because if it has been SORN then you have to take it off the road. It shouldn't invalidate the tax or mot, but why declare it as SORN when it is roadworthy, to declare it as SORN means it's off the road. If you do declare it you will have to do it. |

if it's sorn then it need to off a public road or area. you have to do it, with the tax you can claim back the remainder of the time and re-tax it when it's back on the road. the MOT will just carry on |

If the vehicle is declared as SORN it MUST NOT be used on a public road full stop. If you use the vehicle you will be liable for a fine of up to £5000 and imprisonment, the maximum penalty for not registering change of ownership is £1000, so i'd think twice if I were you - sound's like you're not insured to me |
