Do I Need To Report Accident When Getting New Car Insurance?

About 8 months ago I was at-fault in a car accident. A few days ago, I went to get my record from the DMV and it does not have any accidents listed. I am about to switch insurance companies.

Do I need to tell the new insurance company about this accident, even if it does not show up on my Driver's License record? Am I in the clear? Is there another place where they can find out about it?

Also, when applying for a new policy, the insurance company asks about my old policy information. Do they contact my old insurance company and confirm with them?

They usually ask if you've been in any accidents in the last year or two, and lying could come back to bite you if you ever file a claim. They have a record of your accident SOMEWHERE.....if it was reported.

If they ask you about it you must tell the truth and report it. There is probably a place on the application where you will swear that you have told the truth and that you understand that the insurance is void if you lied.

They won't check now but if you are in an accident in the future they will check your record and find out. If you lied your claim could be denied.

Sometimes it takes a while to show up on your record. Insurance companies don't report them the next day. I did that once. And, a year and a half later, when my insurance companies did a regular check, they found it. My premium went up.
They'll find out eventually.

I would NOT mention it and see what happens. If your new company finds out about it, and your rate goes up, you can always switch later. It isn't a crime to "forget" about a previous accident when talking to an insurance company.

You don't need to say anything about it unless they ask but it will show up on your insurance at some point.

I would omit the information for now as its not on your record, or you can compare quotes with it on and with it off and decide wehter to include it or not. However be advised that insurance companies upon renewal every 6 months pull your record, so if they find out then after you didnt tell them about it, they could drop you from their insurance and you would likely then have trouble finding insurance that is decent and at a resonable rate elsewhere.
