Do I have to insure my son when he turns 16?
|
My auto insurance company called me yesterday asking for the names and birthdays of my children. I refused to tell them anything. My oldest son will turn 16 in November, and I was not planning on adding him as a driver, because we have full coverage insurance and I thought that would cover anyone.

It's perfectly normal to ask that. As a matter of fact, all the insurance companies that we work with require us to ask the insured (you guys) if there's anybody aged 14 (sometimes 16) or over. This is NOT going to change your premium in the least bit. What it is is insurance companies want to know if they are going to be listed as drivers on the policy and if not, to exclude them. Now, be careful when you exclude because if they drive the car and crash, they're not going to have any coverage. If they do use the car, add them. It's going to cost a lot but it's better than you paying $15,000 out of your own pocket to personally cover their accident. OH! I forgot to tell you, you mentioned that you have full coverage on your car and that you thought anybody can drive, that's not entirely true. Anybody who lives in your household has to be either included or excluded. Anybody outside of your household over a certain age bracket with a valid drivers license will have coverage if they have an accident. This is in California and this is with certain companies. Call your insurance company and ask them if friends, neighbors or visiting relatives have coverage if they drive your car. I hope this helps you out. |

If he drives and he is a member of your househould, he must be added to your coverage. If he will not be driving any of your insured cars, you don't have to tell them squat. |

You can insure your children even before that. If not insurance atleast get a mediclaim done. Its very essential as hospital costs and medication costs are very high. |

No you only give them the names of the people that will drive the car if your son will not drive the car they don't need his information but if he ever drives the car and he is not on the insurance and something happens you will be in a lot of trouble. |

If there is any chance your son will be driving, with or without your permission, you need to add him to your policy. Only listed drivers are covered.
Don't take the risk of not adding him. The result could be financially devastating. |

If you let your son drive your car He needs to be insured. I had the same thing but I told them My son would not be driving until He could pay for the Insurance. |

It depends which state you live in. Not all states require drivers to be insured. But in Oregon for example, it would be illegal for your son to drive uninsured. |

In most states, he is covered on your policy as a learning driver, as long as he holds a learner's permit. If/when he gets his liscense, you will need to add him to your insurance, unless he very occasionally drives any of your vehicles. |

Your insurance company has to have the names of any licensed drivers in your home that are planning on driving any car covered. He is male and under 25, so expect your rates to go up. If he is a good student you can discounts for that. |

Yeah, if he has a license. Your suspose to anyway, I remember it being a big deal when I was 16 cause the insurance company called my parents and said that I had to be insured on both of their cars even though I wasn't driving my dad's and they were planing on buying me one of my own but I was still suspose to be insured on everything, they were pretty upset about it. |

You should go ahead and tell them. Then ask them about the insurance. Maybe full coverage in your agency means everything for one person. |

First of all you must ask yourself this question.
1. Does your son have a drivers liscense?
2. If he does not, and does not plan on driving any of the family cars, then your insurance agency needs to put him on as an "excluded driver" on your policy. What that means is that he lives in your house, but you do not plan on him driving the vehicle. If this is the case, this is the cheapest route for you.
3. If he is planning on driving your cars, then you must add him. It will be expensive initially, cause his age group are the highest risk drivers.
Hope this helps, and if it did, PICK ME FOR BEST ANSWER. |

He still needs to be added to your policy. If he gets into an accident and is not covered, by him being 16, it will be a no insurance ticket. |
